Bleach, ch237
I always want to write an entire essay about this moment, because I love it so much. I love it for my OTP, of course, but more than that I love it for Orihime, who is facing this horrible situation and taking it all on her own shoulders and yet still somehow manages to smile even through her tears.
She loves this boy in front of her so much, she’s leaving to save all of her friends, she wanted so much to be able to say goodbye to all of them, but she could only choose one. So, she chooses the boy that she loves to say goodbye to, wanting to just sneak one kiss before she leaves, quite possibly to never return, she might very well die in Los Noches, so she just wants one thing before she goes.
But she can’t do it. She wanted all these things, those five different lifetimes of trying different foods and jobs and situations! She wanted to live in five different towns to experience those five lifetimes! And for those five lifetimes… she would fall in love with the same person every time. She loves him that much, she loves him enough to never want to choose anyone else. This, on the eve of a situation that she may well not come back from, in a situation where no one would be the wiser if she had taken that kiss… she doesn’t. Because it wouldn’t be the way she wanted it, because it wouldn’t be the right thing to do.
Even when she’s terrified and probably just wants a small comfort, she doesn’t take the kiss. Even when she wants all these things in life, but only wants to love this boy out of all the possibilities available, she doesn’t take the kiss. Even when she loves him this much and doesn’t need him to love her in return, she doesn’t take the kiss.
It’s easy to see how badly she wants it here, how much emotional turmoil she’s in, how it’s a quiet scene where nobody would know but her. But sometimes it’s also easy to forget that she’s likely realizing that this could be her LAST CHANCE TO SEE HIM EVER, to see anything of her life here! She’s going to an incredibly dangerous place where she could die, where she might be held prisoner forever. It isn’t just that she’s scared, it’s also that she might very well never come back.
But she still doesn’t take the kiss because it wouldn’t be the right way. Instead, she berates herself for being tempted, (“This is the end and I try to do something like that…”) because she holds herself to impossible standards, because she tries to take everything on herself.
Orihime is amazing in this moment, because she’s human and has feelings and temptations, because she’s scared of what’s looming immediately in front of her, and HOW MANY OF US WOULD BE AS STRONG AS SHE IS? How many of us would instead be curled up in a corner, desperately wishing the whole thing away? Instead, she writes down a to-do list for taking care of her apartment, she goes to say her goodbyes, she even refuses to take something that she wants so desperately, because it’s not the right way. She faces her situation with determination and acceptance, hatching her own plan that’s one she may never come back from, but she’ll do it to save her friends.
Because Inoue Orihime is a beautiful person on the inside, through and through. I love this scene for the IchiHime, of course. But I love it even more because of Orihime herself.
